The big blast theory proposes that in the solar systems recent past, within the past 100 million years (and possibly within the past 100,000 years) a giant explosion erupted from the face of the sun which has shaped certain characteristics of the solar system as we now see it.
This explosion was most likely a superflare (or sequence of superflares) but could have been as large as a mini nova-like outburst from the sun.
The blast from the sun is theorized to explain:
- The formation of comets
- The formation of the asteroid belt
- The formation of the Kuiper belt
- The removal of Mars’ and Venus’ oceans
- The removal of Mars’ (and other planets) atmospheres and magnetospheres
- A large number of other solar system oddities
